Here is a list of people who have earned more than $100 billion

Here is a list of people that have given away over $100 billion.

Unless you are from India, it is very unlikely that you recognize the name Jamsetji Tata. Yet this man, born in 1839, quietly holds the record as the most philanthropic individual in history and the only person ever to donate more than $100 billion.

Note: This figure is based on inflation-adjusted calculations of contributions made through the Tata Trusts over more than a century. Here is the estimate from the EdelGive Hurun Philanthropists of the century report, which puts the total at about $102 billion in today’s dollars.

This number is not so large because Jamsetji Tata donated massive sums during his lifetime. Most of it is posthumous and comes from the way he structured his wealth. Unlike most industrialists, he did not retain the majority of his fortune under his own name. Instead, he placed most of it into charitable trusts, collectively known today as the Tata Trusts.

These trusts own a controlling stake in Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group. As a result, profits generated by companies such as Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Power, and many others ultimately flow into these trusts. That money is then used for philanthropic work.

This approach is fundamentally different from modern billionaire philanthropy, where individuals donate a portion of their personal wealth after accumulating it or at the end of their lives. Those donations typically end with the person. In Jamsetji Tata’s case, even though he lived in the 1800s, the structure he created continues to generate resources for public good today. That is why he surpasses figures such as Andrew Carnegie, Alfred Nobel, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffett in total philanthropic impact.

The Tata Trusts work in many areas such as education, healthcare, rural development, and scientific research. Basically, wherever help has been needed, they have tried to contribute. One of the first major projects started by Jamsetji Tata was the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. Today, this institute is not only the leading center for scientific research in the country but also a major reason behind India’s academic excellence, with national prosperity following as a byproduct.

Another important detail is that these donations were never driven by publicity. There were no global announcements, branding campaigns, or media tours. For decades, this work went largely unnoticed outside India. Much of the world only became aware of the scale of these contributions after global philanthropy reports calculated their cumulative value.

To put it simply, in the world of philanthropy where hundreds of wealthy individuals have taken similar approaches and made major contributions we should be thankful for, nothing comes close to what Jamsetji Tata achieved, not just in scale but also in impact, earning him a place as the most impactful philanthropist in history.
